I have a fiance in prison now. He had to be in local Kern county jail for 2 1/2 months just for them to send him to Wasco receiving. He’s now been there two months and he’s been overlooked on the problems he has. He has a mental disorder that’s been incorrectly diagnosed and a substance abuse addiction. He has not received any services pertinent to his recovery and or his health. He has not even got a visit from his counselor. This is a problem. The prison system needs to have classes, and programs within the system. The inmates should have access to begin taking classes and or mental health services immediately to better their-selves so when they get out of jail they will be better productive members of society.
The big problem with the prison system is that the inmates become institutionalized so when they get out of jail they go right back to what they know and are used to. If they developed self-help, classes, and training while in jail, then when released they should have opportunity to go to a transition house or facility that will give them work skills and training. This will give them an opportunity to save up enough money to be self-sufficient so they are not released in to the lions den and in turn the crime rates would go down because we are not just letting inmates out of jail with nowhere to go. These are mostly people suffering from drug/alcohol abuse or mental illness. I really hope something like this can be implemented into our jail system I truly feel it will make a huge impact for the better within our society.
